By Heather Suttie During Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we have the chance to spotlight the multitude of positive dimensions surrounding neurodiversity and inclusivity. One entrepreneur at the forefront of this movement is Angela Prentner-Smith, the innovative founder and Managing Director of This is Milk. She is also the driving force behind Neve Learning, a ground-breaking platform advocating for a neurodiversity-first approach to training and education. Neurodiversity encompasses a rich tapestry of cognitive styles, including Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Autism, and ADHD. However, beyond mere categorisations, neurodiversity embodies the recognition, celebration, and encouragement of individuals
who navigate the world with distinct perspectives and responses. Angela Prentner-Smith said: “Neurodiversity isn’t a barrier—it’s an invaluable resource waiting to be acknowledged. In the entrepreneurial sphere, where innovation thrives, diverse perspectives fuel creativity”. Statistics reveal that roughly 15% of individuals in the UK are neuro-distinct and embarking on the entrepreneurial journey has illuminated both the challenges and opportunities associated with neurodiversity. Recent research by The Entrepreneurs Network paints a sobering picture of the hurdles neurodivergent founders encounter in the business landscape. Only a mere 4% claim to have never faced discrimination due to their distinct neurological makeup. These statistics lay bare the stark reality of the barriers neurodivergent individuals confront simply because their brains process information differently. “In the entrepreneurial realm, where innovation reigns supreme, neurodiversity should be celebrated as a source of ingenuity rather than stigmatised. Yet, as the research reveals, nearly eight in 10 of us feel compelled to conceal our neurotypes to some extent—a survival strategy born from a society that often fails to comprehend and appreciate our unique perspectives and capabilities,” said Prentner-Smith. Prentner-Smith’s passion for neurodiversity transcends mere advocacy; it’s woven into the very fabric of her business ethos. That’s why This is Milk is launching Neve Learning—a neurodiversity-first training platform designed to cater to all learners from the ground up. She adds, “For me, founding This is Milk wasn’t merely about building a sustainable business; it was a vital necessity. Like 64% of neurodivergent founders surveyed, I recognised that establishing my own venture was the pathway to truly flourishing in the professional sphere. My neuro-distinct traits weren’t obstacles; they were catalysts igniting innovation and tenacity. Rather than retrofitting courses to accommodate needs, Neve Learning embraces inclusivity from inception, ensuring an enriching experience for all participants. Prentner-Smith said, “What we found when undertaking research with learnings – is that everyone forged their own learning pathway, everyone has a unique brain, so Neve Learning is better for everyone”. The Entrepreneurs Network’s research underscores the transformative potential of embracing neurodiversity in the entrepreneurial landscape. Prentner-Smith said, “We must challenge misconceptions, champion understanding, and celebrate the myriad ways neurodiversity enriches our professional pursuits. As we observe Neurodiversity Celebration Week, let’s recognise, embrace, and celebrate the valuable contributions of neurodiverse individuals, ensuring that our entrepreneurial landscape is inclusive and supportive for all”.
